Food for Judicial thought

Saw this story today on Fox News.

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A spokesman says a Somali Islamic court has amputated the hands of two men accused of theft and lashed another accused of rape.

An eyewitness says kitchen knives
were used to amputate a hand off each of the screaming men on a large table. He declined to be named for fear of reprisals.

Now like many of you I had the initial reaction that there is something fundamentally unfair that while a thief would have a body part lopped off a rapist would not share the same fate. I mean, whip versus Ginsu knife? There is no choice to be made here. But it shoes the relative value a culture puts on life. For instance. Somali A rapes a woman, physically abusing her and giving her life long Psychological scars. He gets a beating. Somali B takes and apple and gets his hand chopped off? Doesn't make a lot of sense now does it.

But then I came to the conclusion that our system is equally flawed. American A intentionally runs over a dog with his car and is convicted of animal cruelty. Result, 180 days in the county jail. American B gets pregnant unintentionally but as a result of irresponsible behavior. She has her baby killed. That's just a choice according to our judiciary. Just some food for thought.
